Tenants

My son used to own a cottage in England that dates back to the sixteenth century. It was called Stonehouse Cottage and it was small with a low ceiling, low roof and solid rock walls.

He reflected on the fact that whilst he said he owned it, many people owned it before him in centuries past, and now those who bought it off him, own it.

We never really own anything, we are just temporary residents – we are tenants, not owners. Everything we say we own will either wear out, be sold, or pass on to a future generation. Even our own bodies are on temporary loan and will have to be returned to where they came from.

The bible tells us that the things we can see are temporary, however, the things we cannot see are eternal. We cannot see God, but he is eternal. Our own spirit cannot be seen, but it is eternal as it was breathed into us by the breath of God.

We can have permanent possessions though when we put our trust in Jesus. Jesus himself said we can have treasure in heaven.

Matthew 6:19-21 says, “Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal; but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”

A famous missionary, Jim Elliot once said, “He is no fool who gives up what he cannot keep, to gain what he cannot lose.”

I encourage you to make wise choices.
